Traditionally, javelins have been assigned a ‘distance rating’ to indicate their potential performance. This rating took into account the javelins aerodynamic capabilities and indicated how far it would be expected to travel with a 'clean' throw. Whilst distance ratings acted as a good rule of thumb when selecting a javelin, it didn’t take into account the throwers skill level and over time distance ratings have become outdated.
