Traditionally, javelins have been assigned a ‘distance rating’ to indicate their potential performance. This rating took into account the javelins aerodynamic capabilities and indicated how far it would be expected to travel with a ‘clean’ throw. Whilst distance ratings acted as a good rule of thumb when selecting a javelin, it didn’t take into account the throwers skill level and over time distance ratings have become outdated.
In our 2012 catalogue, the method of rating javelin performance has been revolutionised with the introduction of Nordic’s new ‘Flex’ ratings.
What is Javelin Flex?
Simply put, Flex is an indicator of how rigid/stiff a javelin is. Carbon javelins are typically the most rigid, and therefore have a low Flex rating. Aluminium javelins are generally much more flexible and have much higher Flex ratings. To get the best performance from a javelin, you should choose one with a Flex most suited to your ability.
Which javelin should I choose?
As a throwers technical ability improves, the requirement for a stiffer javelin increases.
At the top end of the scale, a carbon javelin with low Flex won’t vibrate as much in the air and will be constructed with maximum aerodynamic performance in mind, both of which result in longer distances when thrown correctly. Excellent technical abilities are required to fulfil the potential of javelins with a Flex rating of 6.0 or lower and should only be considered by those with consistently good throws (men throwing over 70m or women throwing over 50m).
Javelins with ratings between 6.1 and 8.0 are slightly more forgiving and better suited to intermediate/moderately advanced throwers. Javelins rated between 8.1 and 10.0 are designed to land with the tip first even on average throws and are suitable for throwers with intermediate skills. Finally, javelins rated over 10.1 are best suited to beginners and for use in volume training.

The winter months mean one thing at Stadia Sports, and that is ‘catalogue time’! Some of our team at Ely have spent their time over the last couple of months carefully putting together the 2012 catalogue. During this time, we have come across a couple of new products which have got us very excited. The products in question are the Skyer and the Multi Stumps created by Fusion Sports.
We love innovation here at Stadia and we especially like innovative products that have been proven at the highest level. Fusion Sports Skyer and Multi Stumps are used by most of the test playing nations and the vast majority of the first class county sides in the UK, so their quality and durability is unquestionable.
The Skyer is a distinctive and unique, luminous orange bat. It isn’t just an ordinary bat though! It is two-thirds the size of a normal bat with a springy foam face. It is designed to offer you more precision and more power than a normal cricket bat for fielding drills. It is used with one hand, allowing the other to be used to self-feed the balls or it can be used with a baseball glove in order to take returns from the practicing fielders. The Skyer will not only be able to dramatically improve standards of fielding in the modern game, but also reduce fatigue and injury of the coach or player in charge of the practice due to its weight and ease of use. Players and coaches have been able to achieve up to a seven second hang time! The bat’s versatility comes to the fore when you use the separate grip area which allows the bottom hand to be used on the bat in order to provide more precision for practice for very close fielders.
The second piece of equipment designed and created by Fusion Sports is the Multi-Stump, aptly named due to the multiple roles it can perform. This revolutionary aid provides the coach and player with a training tool which responds to the needs of the modern cricketer. It is weather resistant, durable, light, flexible and bright. Due to the interchangeable bases it can be easily used on grass, Astroturf or indoor surfaces. A must with the UK’s ever changing weather!
The multi-stump was designed following a request from the England cricket team to provide a stump which would not be routinely broken by their fast bowlers. That call was answered with the Multi-Stump, which allows the ball to travel through the stump with minimal deflection. It is also used as a catching training aid. By passing a ball through the stump, by either throwing, hitting with a cricket bat or using a Katchet, the ball takes a small secondary deflection through to waiting keeper and slip. The Multi-Stump is a must have for any club or school and a leap forward in cricket training aids.
There are many ways in which the Multi-Stump and Flyer can improve and enhance your clubs, team or school’s practise sessions. You can get plenty of ideas from watching this video:
We will have the Skyer and Multi-Stumps available for purchase soon, in plenty of time for the 2012 season. If you want more information or to reserve your bat or stumps, please call us on 01353 668686.
We are really excited to be releasing the brand new self weighted Roller Goal, which we have designed and manufactured in the UK. The Roller Goal is of high quality and a good value alternative to many other goals we see on the market and we are ready to despatch them now!
You spoke, we listened and delivered!
Throughout the year, you have been telling us that a goal of this type would be beneficial to you when manoeuvring the goals around your site. Therefore our primary concern was a goal that met the highest standards of workmanship and safety and would be simple to use. The goal is easy to assemble and even easier to move around your sports pitch thanks to the flip over wheels and galvanised steel rolling, weighted back bar.
The integral weighted cylindrical back bar eliminates the need for any anchoring of the goal when it is in place and it has been tested and designed, to ensure that the highest standards of quality and safety are present. Throughout the process we have kept in mind the importance of cost to you – our valued customers, and have ensured that the Roller Goal offers value for money as well as quality and safety.
The self weighted Roller Goal is suitable for both grass and artificial pitches and comes in a number of sizes including full senior size and 5, 7 and 9 side. The ease of manoeuvrability means that the goals can be moved out of the way when not required – great for accessibility and allowing your turf to recover.
We are extremely proud to have extended the range of goals that we can now provide you with; this is an offering that has the potential to become extremely popular. The design and manufacture of this goal has underlined our aim to ensure we are offering the widest range of sports equipment we possibly can and highlights our ability to manufacture products in line with our customers’ needs.

A new Ball Hall sports facility was recently opened by Her Majesty the Queen at St John’s Beaumont in Windsor. The £2m facility includes a rock climbing wall, a state-of-the-art cricket facility, rowing room, gymnasium and a sports hall.
The sports hall also provides enough room for assembly space, allowing examinations and presentations to take place. An ingenious demountable draping system installed during construction enables the conversion of the main sports hall to an elegant indoor space for gatherings of the school community and other social engagements.
A brand new Ball Hall at Parkestone Girls Grammar School in Poole was recently opened by Tottenham Hotspur Manager, Harry Redknapp. Stadia Sports Installations helped design and equip the new four badminton court size sports hall facility. The £1.35m project also included a staff office, class/meeting room and two 32 person changing rooms.
At the Opening Ceremony the Chair of Governors, Cary Wicks said that she had been working to achieve a sports hall for ten years and it was “serendipity” that the school had found Ball Hall. She went on to praise the Ball Hall team for delivering such a quality facility at a price that the school could afford.
